その８－「目的」は、purpose or object？

日本語の「目的」を訳す場合は注意が必要です。「object」だと「physical object」という解釈が可能になるからです。

日本語：本発明の目的は、ターミナルボディとゴム部材との間から水の侵入を防止することで、電池のリークを防止するプラグキャップを提供することである。

英語（誤）：The object of the present invention is to provide a plug cap that prevents current leakage by preventing the ingress of water from between a terminal body and a rubber member.

英語（正）：The purpose of the present invention is to provide a plug cap that prevents current leakage by preventing the ingress of water from between a terminal body and a rubber member.

＊注釈（ＭＫＴＦ）：日本の弁理士さんは、明細書内では、「An object of the present invention is to provide ...」の方を好まれます。

同じカタカナでも英語では違う単語を使う場合があります。

１．「チップ」
（日本語）ボールを回転可能に抱持するボールペンチップを提供する。
（英語）Provided is a ballpoint pen tip that rotatably holds a pen.

（日本語）パッケージ部品（１０１）は、パッケージ本体（２２）と、その内部に収納されたＩＣチップ（３１）を備えている。
（英語）A packaged component (101) is provided with a packaging body (22) and an IC chip (31) that is accommodated on the interior thereof.

２．「シリコン」
