その８－「目的」は、purpose or object？

日本語の「目的」を訳す場合は注意が必要です。「object」だと「physical object」という解釈が可能になるからです。

日本語：本発明の目的は、ターミナルボディとゴム部材との間から水の侵入を防止することで、電池のリークを防止するプラグキャップを提供することである。

英語（誤）：The object of the present invention is to provide a plug cap that prevents current leakage by preventing the ingress of water from between a terminal body and a rubber member.

英語（正）：The purpose of the present invention is to provide a plug cap that prevents current leakage by preventing the ingress of water from between a terminal body and a rubber member.

その７－カタカナに注意要（パート２）

同じカタカナでも英語では違う単語を使う場合があります。

１．「チップ」
（日本語）ボールを回転可能に抱持するボールペンチップを提供する。
（英語）Provided is a ballpoint pen tip that rotatably holds a pen.

（日本語）パッケージ部品（１０１）は、パッケージ本体（２２）と、その内部に収納されたＩＣチップ（３１）を備えている。

その６－カタカナに注意要

カタカナを訳す場合は、注意が必要です。

日本語：電解コンデンサは、コンデンサ端子と、電解液と、コンデンサ端子と電解液を封じた外装体とを備える。

英語（誤）：An electrolytic condensor is provided with a condensor element, an electrolytic solution, and a housing in which the condensor element and the electorlytic solution are sealed.
英語（正）：An electrolytic capacitor is provided with a capacitor element, an electrolytic solution, and a housing in which the capacitor element and the electorlytic solution are sealed.

日本語：ダビングシステム
英語（誤）：dubbing system
英語（正）：copying system

その５－「行う」は、常に「perform」というわけではない。

「行う」、「実行する」は、常に「perform」、「execute」、「carry out」と訳せるわけではありません。

日本語：基板の表面に処理を行う手段
英語（誤）：a means for performing a treatment on the surface of a substrate
英語（正）：a means for treating the surface of a substrate

その４－日本語の略号は、正しい英語にせよ

日本語では一般的な略号であっても、英訳する場合は、正しい英語にせよ。

日本語：ＴＭケース１２の後端部にはアダプタ１７が設けられる。

英語（誤）：An adaptor (17) is provided to the rear end of a T/M case (12).

英語（正）An adaptor (17) is provided to the rear end of a transmission case (12).

その３－代名詞の使用は避けろ

代名詞（it, that, these, etc.）の使用は避けましょう。

ではなく、

Organic Compound and Method of Producing Same

にしましょう。

ではなく、

にしましょう。

ではなく、

申し上げるまでもないと思いますが、要約中の参照符号には（）が必要です。原文の日本語に（）がなくても英文には必要です。
